Shanghai Attractions

Important update: because China’s Travel Restrictions due to COVID-19 have not been relaxed, we are sad to announce that IEEE WIFS 2022 will be held fully online.

Shanghai is the third largest city of the world and hence offers all necessary infrastructure to host a conference. In addition, Shanghai has a very old culture and long history which one can still feels today. Among all Shanghai attractions, the most iconic may be:

  • People's square [Wikipedia article]: the vast and iconic square in the heart of Shanghai features the Shanghai Museum [Wikipedia article] , the Fine art Museum (former race club building) [Wikipedia article], the Grand Theatre [Wikipedia article], People's park [Wikipedia article] and Madame Tussauds Shanghai [Wikipedia article].

  • The Bund [Wikipedia article]: historical and protected district with a remarkable pedestrian waterfront facing Pudong modern district and its skyscrapers among the highest in the world.

  • The busy Nanjing road [Wikipedia article], connecting People's Square and the Bund, that never sleeps is also definitely a must see.

  • The Finance and Trade Zone of Pudong emphasizes the modernity of Shanghai and offers an impressive skyline that includes the Oriental Pearl Tower [Wikipedia article], the Jin Mao Tower [Wikipedia article] and the Shanghai Tower [Wikipedia article] culminating at 632m, second tallest of the world and by far the tallest twisted building.

  • YuYuan Garden [Wikipedia article] a must-see extensive Chinese garden that contrasts very much with its surrounding City God Temple including the Yuyuan old street [TripAdvisor article] and Tourist Mart [TripAdvisor article].

  • Former French Concession [Wikipedia article] retains a distinct character and is a popular tourist destination.

  • Shanghai also exhibits several iconic temples among which Jing'an Temple [Wikipedia article] is certainly the largest and the most famous but City God Temple [Wikipedia article], as well as Jade Buddha Temple [Wikipedia article] and Longhua Temple [Wikipedia article] are also examples that are worth visiting.

  • Parcs are almost omnipresent in the city ; they are vast enough to allow taking a break from the overcrowded city while exhibiting typical Chinese activities that shape its culture.

  • Eventually, to take the most of Shanghai one may enjoy a random walk in the city center among traditional buildings and modern skyscrapers and taste specialties, such as "dumplings" or Chinese raviolis, in local restaurants.
